The Aeroflex-IFR 2946A is a lightweight and rugged Communications Service Monitor designed for demanding avionics maintenance and field applications. Weighing under 12 kg and equipped with an ergonomic side handle and optional protective ever-ready case, it is the ideal instrument for both workshop precision and remote site deployment.

The 2946A provides a comprehensive suite of avionics test functions, making it an essential tool for aircraft and avionics maintenance facilities:

• ILS (Instrument Landing System): Localizer with 0-25% DDM in 0.1% steps, Glideslope 0-45% DDM, 1020 Hz ident signal, and graphical aircraft display representation
• VOR (VHF Omnidirectional Range): 9.96 kHz sub-carrier with 0-99% modulation, bearing control 0-360° in 0.1° steps, TO/FROM beacon selection, automatic bearing sweep
• SELCAL (Selective Calling): Amplitude modulation with selectable tone pairs, table-based data entry for characters A through S
• Marker Beacon: 75 MHz carrier with 400 Hz, 1.3 kHz, and 3 kHz modulation rates for outer, middle, and inner beacon testing

The built-in spectrum analyzer covers 100 kHz to 1.0 GHz with resolution bandwidths from 300 Hz to 3 MHz. Features include 80 dB on-screen dynamic range, marker level and frequency indication with delta marker capability, and tracking generator offset from 0 to 999 MHz. The unique Live Look and Listen function allows simultaneous signal examination and demodulation, enabling rapid isolation of intermittent interference.

The integrated signal generator operates from 400 kHz to 1.05 GHz with 10 Hz resolution and +5 dBm output (+7 dBm overrange). Level accuracy is ±2 dB at all levels above -127 dBm on the N-Type connector. Full duplex operation is provided as standard with no restrictions to duplex offset, allowing simultaneous testing of transmitter and receiver paths.

The 2946A measures power from 2 µV to 150 Watts without external attenuators, making it suitable for both low-level circuit probing and direct high-power base station measurements. Measurement accuracy of better than 10% is guaranteed down to 5 mW on the N-Type connector.

Built-in support for AMPS, TACS, NMT analog cellular standards with all country variants, plus MPT 1327/1343 trunking and EDACS radio and repeater test capabilities. Network simulation allows signaling protocol testing for receiver and transmitter qualification.

Features include AF voltage measurement (20 Hz to 20 kHz), SINAD, distortion (0-100%), and S/N ratio measurements with autoranging bar-chart displays. Built-in audio filters: 300 Hz, 3 kHz, 15 kHz lowpass; 300 Hz to 3.4 kHz bandpass; 300 Hz highpass with 750 µs de-emphasis.
